Maria has personality! Bette and I get to meet such wonderful families – I can’t think of any other profession that could be so rewarding and fun.
Lots of fun in our Rockville studio two days before Christmas photographing the Miller Family!
Family photographs on location in Vienna, VA. I photographed Chris and Mary Jo’s wedding years ago and we have been taking family pictures since the arrival of their first born, Brett and here we are today photographing their grandchildren along with the rest of the family. My portraits were framed and throughout the house from years past. I realized that through all our years of photographing weddings and families how blessed we are to work in such a wonderful and creative occupation and the added gem is the friendship that we share with wonderful people like Chris and Mary Jo Warner and their family.
Every holiday season we get calls from past clients and it’s always a pleasant surprise as it was with the Naito family when Neil, the dad, called and scheduled an appointment in our Rockville, Maryland studio. We hadn’t seen the children since they were very small and how they have grown! After we finished most everything young Kenneth, now 15 years old, pulled out his violin and put on a black shirt. He proceeded to play Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 which resonated from our studio throughout the house as it brought goose bumps to my skin. He has performed in Russia, Italy and Germany. He’s played with the Kostroma Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Colombia Orchestra, and the London Towne Symphony. It turns out that he has been playing for 11 years and is studying under Naoko Tanaka plus he attends Juilliard Pre-College. It’s also noteworthy that his Mom and Sister are accomplished violists.
Alyssa and her Dad, my close friend, Scott Herman came to our Rockville studio for some ballet portraits. My intention was to create an old fashion look using light modifiers with grids and spot lights with scrims to produce images that had an artsy look. As I looked at the test images there was an illustrative feeling that took over, I began to feel as though I was painting with light. I even turned some of the images into black & white while shooting, something I never attempt to do. The most amazing element was Alyssa, a young dancer at the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre & Academy, who from the very moment we started, choreographed her own poses and movement. Many years ago I did a little work with the National School of Ballet and the National Ballet and there has always been an instructor and/or choreographer and even an art director to guide the movement and poses and help with the studio or stage set. We had lots of fun and my trusty high school assistant, student and intern, Devin Streight, shot a lot of pictures as well. I am privileged to work with such talented and visionary young people and hope this small sampling of images from a larger body of work conveys the spirit of the moment.
Aspen Hill Christian church has the beginnings of producing a very unique and original church directory.
