I had a portrait assignment in downtown DC today for a law firm and photographed a good portion of the firm with the exception of the partners which I will do in August. Whenever I photograph someone I try to visualize a movie star, a character actor, someone from my past, etc… I let my imagination go wild and mostly concentrate first on the clients eyes and it helps to know a little bit about whom they are, therefore I ask a lot of questions. This portrait was easy because I immediately saw Sherlock Holmes as he appeared to me in my imagination as a youngster when I poured through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective novels about the mysterious adventures of Holmes and Watson. I made a 1930 or 40 type black & white Hollywood style image for comparison to the color image. Now all I need would be a few props like a pipe and British two bill cap with a library setting in the background.
